Southport U3A

Frank Nicholson – April Speaker

Frank Nicholson gave us a really interesting talk entitled ‘What Glaciers Have Done for Us’ With some amazing pictures he explained how glaciers have reshaped our geography, changed our climate, and still provide us with diverse resources from fertile agricultural land to hydroelectricity. He explained how analysing the ice gives us an idea of the climate changes over the last twenty thousand years since the last ice age. He showed us an illustration of how Great Britain was once attached to Europe as a peninsular, then the sea level was about 120m lower than it is today.During the Mesolithic period at least two catastrophic glacial lake outburst floods raised the sea level and created the English Channel.
