“It’s lovely to see such a vibrant u3a!“
This month we were treated to a fascinating talk on Egyptology, by Neil Stevenson, ex North West u3a Trustee, a gentleman who has worked tremendously hard supporting the u3a at local, regional and national level, implementing many beneficial changes over the years.
As the u3a’s authority on Egyptology, he revealed the importance of women in Egypt and how family life and respecting and supporting the female lineage was key to generations of success. Succession from a woman was definitely parental, whereas a man’s lineage could not be guaranteed, so the royal linage passed through the female rather than the male lines, most unusual in history.
His beautiful photography from Temples and the ‘Valley of the Queens’ took us through the ancient Egyptians’ timeline, even sharing with us some amulets he brought along from his collection.
Neil has a list of 40 talks and regularly appears on the u3a Third Age Trust, free Zoom talks , which are well worth a look.
Before Neil’s talk, the second of our Short Story winners, Alan Williams, shared his 1000 words story ‘Rainz’. This is a tender tale from tragedy to joy, as a gentleman, recently suffering from a stroke, was stranded in the rain. Soaked, he embraced the beauty of nature. Alan has 26 published books, 13 in large print and 8 in Southport library.
Neil’s parting words were ‘It’s lovely to see such a vibrant u3a’ .
