Victoria Park Bandstand – Help Needed!
Victoria Park’s Listed Grade II Victorian Bandstand is in much need of repair. Built in March 1890, the once elegant, iconic feature was once the focus of Summer bands and picnics in Victoria Park.
The bandstand operated as an open air school from 1920 until after WW11 caring for children too frail for full time education and was well attended in all weathers. It has been patched up for many years but now the time has come to bring in a contractor to replace the roof timbers, so it may once again be used for brass bands, ukulele bands and choirs for summers to come.
If you care about our History and would like to help, Southport u3a will be creating a ‘Save our Band Stand’ Team. Our first job will be to repaint the black and silver wrought iron surround and red Lancashire roses in July, so it will be presentable for the Flower Show.
If you would be willing to wield a paint brush one afternoon soon or would like to help in anyway please contact Chris Howorth using our contact form. You can also speak to her at our monthly Christ Church meeting on July 4th.
