On Wednesday the 4th of March, 21 walkers from Walking Group 4 took the train to Cressington station (open 1861) for a Mersey Tour, starting with a walk through Grassendale Estate to the Albert Dock.

The walk into the estate went past lots of large houses belonging to the Merchants and shipowners of Liverpool. The estate was built in the 1840’s and was a private and gated place.

After walking down to the river’s edge for photos. Rose Case gave a short history talk about days when she was at school in the area and tales of tunnels to the sea!

We then carried on along the Otterspool promenade walkway in glorious warm spring sunshine, stopping half way for lunch looking over the Mersey.

There were a number of people fishing, as Wednesday’s tide was one of the highest this year, but despite the high tide no fish were caught!

As we approached the Pier Head there were lots of interesting new buildings by the river and a spectacular view of the Anglican Cathedral.

When we arrived at the Albert dock, some went home but most of the group went to the Beatles cafe just on the outside of the dock for coffee and cake. It’s a large cafe with lots of Beatles history on the walls and some music!

We all had a great day and the weather was fantastic.

Mileage 6.2miles, time approx 3.5hrs
