After visiting Biddulph Grange Gardens, the Southport U3A Coach Trips Group second visit on the 7th of September was to Little Moreton Hall which is a superb example of a timber-framed moated house with rich ornamental panelling. The Hall may seem fragile but it’s been a remarkable survivor for over 500 years with its crooked walls and uneven floors.
During our visit we had an interesting and amusing talk, in the courtyard, from a guide dressed in traditional Tudor clothing on the history of the Hall. The oldest parts of the house – the great hall and those chambers were built around 1450 for Richard de Moreton, whose family had been landowners in the area for several hundred years. In the 16th century the Moretons added two great bay windows, extended southwards to provide additional accommodation and created a long gallery for promenading and exercising.
