Southport U3A

Gardening Update

Southport u3a Gardening Group Committee

Time for a gardening update from the new Gardening Group Committee, all raring to go for the year ahead. We have a good variety of really excellent speakers lined up; we’ve tried to make the talks appropriate to the season and we usually have a plant sale.

On April 12th we have a self-drive trip to ‘Jacqueline Iddon’s Plant Nursery and Garden for an Easter themed demonstration of Easter floral decorations and spring planters, followed by afternoon tea and cakes. On June 10th we have a trip to Ness Gardens and Port Sunlight, book through Beacon, and more trips are planned.

The most exciting news of all, we have been given the opportunity of creating a show garden at this year’s Southport Show. Our plot is to be on the main route in, opposite the professional gardens with their waterfalls etc. so it needs to be marvellous! We have no record of the u3a having been represented at Southport Show before so a real first for the organisation. The theme we have chosen is to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the u3a and represent as many of our groups as possible, so we will be asking for a lot of support from all of you.

This is an enormous project that will require a lot of planning, hard work & enthusiasm, not to mention thousands of plants. We’ll be thrilled and grateful if any member is willing to help in anyway, with the construction or by donating or even lending plants, if you would like to be involved in this sensational enterprise and maybe get your name in the next gardening update, please contact Lisa Fryer or Diane Fitton via the Gardening group page..
