Southport u3a Speakers for 2023

The first two speakers for 2023 monthly meetings promise to be both interesting and entertaining.

January 5th – Susan Bennett

Speakers for 2023

To start the year, Susan Bennett will be telling us about the infamous Mrs Gallagher. Along with her widowed mother, Mrs Gallager built an empire of 23 brothels in Victorian Liverpool.

Susan Bennett has been a volunteer at the Museum of Liverpool since 2016 and has been part of the ‘Galkoff’s and Pembroke Place’ project team since its beginning. She is regularly asked to give talks about her research.

March 2nd – Elizabeth Heery

Elizabeth Heery

“Writing a Saga” charts Elizabeth Heery’s journey from rejection letters to becoming a published author. She starts by talking about her background as an actress and how that has informed her writing. She covers her connections to Southport: How she went to Christ the King School and about how her family background has been a rich source for her books.

Elizabeth discusses the setting of her books, discovering the genre of saga, writing historical fiction, and how growing up in the North West with her connections to Liverpool as well as Southport, has featured in her novels.

If you would like to hear either of these speakers make sure you attend our monthly meetings at Christ Church on Lord Street.
